Homeowners who are looking to replace cedar shake roofs often turn to Classic Metal Roofing for a number of reasons. First of all, wood shakes are simply not lasting like they used to. I’ve had three different homeowners tell me almost the exact same thing: “Our first cedar shake roof lasted 30 years, but this one is failing after only 10.” The primary reason for that is older cedar shakes were made from old-growth timber, whereas today’s cedar shakes are made from much younger, fast-grown and farmed cedar that just does not seem to last as long.
When a wood shake roof needs replacing, most homeowners would not even consider going to asphalt shingles because of the tremendous visual downgrade that the home would suffer as a result. Real wood shakes are distinctive and beautiful, just like Classic metal roofing is. Replacing a cedar shake roof with asphalt shingles would be like throwing out your best china and replacing it with paper plates.
Cost-wise, most people find that a Classic metal roof is competitive with real cedar shakes; and for the price, you’ll get many years (even decades!) more durability and weathertight protection from a Classic metal roof rather than real cedar. It just makes so much more sense to invest in the more durable materials with the same beautiful appearance as wood shakes.
